Hockey is played by all ages from 5 to over 70's. Starting with Minkey for primary school children, progressing to half-field hockey, junior hockey, and the full game, which can be played through to veterans years.

For beginners there are two main pathways. Hockey Australia promotes hockey through special Hookin2Hockey programs that are run in all states and regions. For young players, both clubs and schools play a modified version of hockey called Minkey {for MINi hocKEY} on a smaller ground with modified rules. It is safe and has been specifically tailored to match young children's physical and mental development.

Mornington Peninsula Hockey Club runs Minkey for young children during the regular hockey season. Details as follows
